Tables strive to maintain a grid state. You can merge and split cells, but try not to complicate the table too much, if your table is bigger than 5×5 cells then there is probably a better way to build your page using CSS.
Upside of Tables
- They allow you to position your content reliably across browsers.
- They are easy to center and size.

Downside of Tables
- They can reduce some search ranking if content is in lower cells.
- Some browsers cant render nested tables properly
- Cell width and height is often not reliable- sometimes spacers are required. This adds junk to your page the is superfluous.
