Tables strive to maintain a grid state.  You can merge and split cells, but try not to complicate the table too much, if your table is bigger than 5×5 cells then there is probably a better way to build your page using CSS.

Upside of Tables

  • They allow you to position your content reliably across browsers.
  • They are easy to center and size.
  • Spacing and padding are carried out in all cells.

Downside of Tables

  • They can reduce some search ranking if content is in lower cells.
  • Some  browsers cant render nested tables properly
  • Cell width and height is often not reliable- sometimes spacers are required.  This adds junk to your page the is superfluous.
