Best of 2009

by hhogan on December 17, 2009

Its list making time!

One of my favorites is from Web Designer Wall whose best CSS designs of 2009 is always a feast for the eyes.  I got hooked on just the first entry from Sushi and Robots; I especially liked the articles on Creating Sexy Stylesheets and styleguides.  Jina Bolton has a lot of great content, ideas, and design to look at – I was inspired and I want to be just like her when I grow up (except Id rather work for Google than Apple ;-)

Fun to take and see results of – the A List Apart Survey of people who make websites.

Time put out a list of the top 50 websites of 2009 some that I hadnt heard about.  As well as top 25 blogs.

I Googled “best of 2009″ and Gawd, there are a lot of best of lists out there. But they are quite general.  At this time of year I do like to reflect, say thank you to all the people who made my year so darn good and reminisce on the great time and not so great times.  Ill have to think up my own best of list and get back to you.

Demo: Div City, Building a Page with Divs

by hhogan on November 5, 2009

How to go from design to web page?

First notice the parts of your content and wrap those parts in divs with ids that describe the content.  Most designs will have a Header, Navigation, Content, and Footer.  Just as your id’s will reflect this and have #header, #nav, #content, #footer- we also need a #wrapper to keep everything in line.

Its good to begin by thinking of your page as a linear layout- like a word doc.  You will wrap each section of content in a div with an id name which describes that content.

The steps that are not shown in the following video clips are:

  1. Open a neew HTML document
  2. Paste all text
  3. Create blank id’s in your CSS
    1. #wrapper
    2. #header
    3. #nav
    4. #content
    5. #footer
  4. Select content.  Ex) select header text
  5. Wrap div around content
  6. Label div with the appropriate id. Ex) selected text is labeled with the id “#header”

That’s about where the video begins.  Sorry about the quality and lack of audio- Im working on it…
